Spalted Beech Bowl

This beautiful small bowl is my first attempt at making a yarn bowl for holding wool. These typically have a small hole with looped gap from the rim allowing wool balls to be placed in the bowl and the thread to escape through the hoop to feed the person who is doing the knitting or crochet. There quite difficult to make and unfortunately for my first attempt this was a little on the light side and needed to be heavier.

This bowl however is very pretty, made from a chunk of Spalted Beech. Spalting is where the tree has circummed to disease and water and fungus have penetrated deep within the wood. The effect is dark blank veins running through the wood that don’t tend to make it any weaker. Spalting is very prised amongst wood turners for its natural beauty and whilst not that rare it does increase the value of the wood.

Dimensions 14cm diameter x 5.5 cm tall. Centre depth 4cm with a 0.5cm thick rim
